MOVIE REVIEW: 21 Jump Street

I cannot stress this enough – going into 21 Jump Street, the last words on my mind were words like “hilarious”, “instant classic”, or even “that was surprisingly fun”.  As a fan of the original 1980s television show upon which this new movie was based, I really had to wonder if this was going to be straw that broke the remake/reboot trend’s back.  Oddly enough, 21 Jump Street has turned out to be the kind of touchstone movie that producers and directors are going to look to as an example of how well an old property can be updated.  By turning a solid teen melodrama into an outrageous “oh, man, they actually went there” film, 21 Jump Street doesn’t hesitate to not only find the line and cross it, but it drags the line to a completely other level before crossing it again.

MOVIE REVIEW-The Rum Diary

Origin stories are not a new concept but as of late usually they are about some guy getting into some crazy outfit and fighting crime in a sprawling urban metropolis fighting for the common man. So it is at times nice to see a film that tries that with a less outrageous type of character. The Rum Diary is a film adapted from the novel of the same name.  In some ways it feels like it’s an origin of the writer of the novel Hunter S. Thompson and in a way a prequel to the last film Johnny Depp play him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Rum Diary

Let’s see if we have the ingredients of The Rum Diary correct:
1) writer ventures to exotic locale and trashes a hotel room
2) an overweight, alcoholic, occasionally drug-addled sidekick
3) lots of authority-dodging and public humiliation
4) a very bad drug trip due to ingestion of a strange substance from an eyedropper
5) one of the two stays behind while the other leaves at the end of the film
Yep.  The Rum Diary is just another retelling of Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but with a calmer, saner approach to its storytelling.

MOVIE REVIEW – Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean

Every successful franchise must come to an end.  But at the same time, every suit over in the mouse house likes to see the green role on in and decides to start that franchise right back up again.  I suppose this was to be expected.  When director Gore Verbinski decided to finalize the trilogy of films he made, it must have been in the back of his head that the world he created would be brought back from the depths of the ocean and we’d all be seeing Captain Jack Sparrow again.

MOVIE REVIEW – Rango

Rango

The first thing I want to say is thank god that an animated film has been shot in 2D! So many times we come to pay more for a film in which there’s no use for it, the glasses make the bright picture look dim, or we’re subjected to pointless 3D gags where things seemingly (and usually ineffectively) come off screen. This is a well-made movie that deserves some attention in the box office this early spring season.

Captain Jack Wants to Come Back

Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides

So far we’ve had 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies that have come out. The fourth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be coming to theaters on May 20. Will it be good? Will we want to see more? Well, it looks as though more may just be a possibility after all.
