Spooky Movie 2015 To those movie fans that reside in the metropolitan area (DC, MD, & VA) of the nation’s capitol, its no secret that the city plays host to a few unique, niche film festivals, each year.  For me, one of the most enjoyable of these festivals is undoubtedly the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival.  Founded by director C.W. One of the unexpected surprises of the 2014 Spooky Movie International Film Festival was the festival selection, THE BONE GARDEN.  Written and directed by Mike Gutridge, the film tells the twisted tale of Alice Hardy (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 scream queen Tracie Savage), an attractive woman who seems to have it all: a successful husband, a beautiful Victorian house, and a best friend. However, beneath the veneer of this seemingly idyllic life lies a sense of sadness and doom as nothing turns out as it appears.  After watching the film, I had the opportunity to catch up with Mr. Gutridge to chat about the film.

In the interview, the writer/director (and John Carpenter-aficionado) reveals how the film came together and what Carpenter-esque easter eggs are sprinkled into the film.  In addition, he also reveals his stance on the remake/reboot trend happening in the horror genre as well as details about his next feature, WOOD FLOORS.  Check it out below….     Continue reading “2014 Spooky Movie International Film Fest EXCLUSIVE: Writer/ Director Mike Gutridge Talks THE BONE GARDEN”

MOVIE REVIEW: The American Scream

Victor Bariteau and family

2009‘s Best Worst Movie showed us that director Michael Stephenson could make a relevant, widely appealing documentary out of some pretty obscure subject matter. That film, his first as a director, chronicled the making of a cult horror phenomenon called Troll 2, a so-bad-it’s-good 1990 B-movie in which he also ‘acted’, and one that needs to be seen to be believed. But the documentary was not entirely about the movie; what it also depicted was a small slice of American culture, as well as the life of a man named George Hardy who had a positive impact on others in his community. It had a refreshing, lighthearted air about it. Continue reading “MOVIE REVIEW: The American Scream”

Spooky Movie Festival: An interview with Justin Timpane, director of Ninjas Vs. Monsters

A few hours before Ninjas Vs. Monsters had its World Premiere at the AFI Silver on Sunday night for the 2012 Spooky Movie Horror Film Festival, I was able to make the acquaintance of writer/director Justin Timpane, a fellow native of Montgomery County, MD, who was also about to participate in a discussion panel with several other local filmmakers including supporter Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project). Epic within the realm of low-budget horror-action-comedies, Ninjas would open to a packed house that evening (in the big theater, if you’re familiar with it) with most of the cast in attendance. Timpane gave me a little history on his insane endeavor.  Continue reading “Spooky Movie Festival: An interview with Justin Timpane, director of Ninjas Vs. Monsters”

Spooky Movie International Film Festival: Exclusive Interview w/ EXCISION Director, Richard Bates Jr.!!

Opening night of the Spooky Movie International Film Festival  started off with a bang as Reel Film News was in attendence to see the twisted film, EXCISION, open the Festival.  The film, directed by Northern Viriginia native Richard Bates Jr.,  tells the story of alienated teen Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord),who struggles with the pressures of fitting into high school, pleasing her parents and a burning desire to lose her virginity. With a grotesque curiosity for the darker side of life, she retreats into her demented erotic fantasies of flesh, death and salvation.  Following an entertaining Q & A , which touched on the genesis of the film’s humble beginnings as a film short to a full length feature, as well as the situations (inspirated from real life experiences) which made their Continue reading “Spooky Movie International Film Festival: Exclusive Interview w/ EXCISION Director, Richard Bates Jr.!!”
