As the title suggests, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. The fraternal screw-ups Mike (Adam DeVine) and Dave Stengel (Zac Efron) have a penchant for ruining family functions. Their antics usually are based on good intentions but, go horribly wrong. In trying to avoid another Christmas gone awry (R.I.P. Grandpa Stengel), Stengel patriarch Burt (Stephen Root) has new rules for the Bros, relating to sister Jeanie’s (Stephanie Beard) Hawaiian wedding. Find respectable date or else. With the ever-growing list of online dating sites available, the duo post on Craigslist and advertise on The Wendy Williams Show about their plight. Their tv appearance draws the interest of hundreds of women (and a few men). Tatianna (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick) are two slackers in desperate need of a vacation from their lives of pizza bites and recreational drug use; the girls swindle their way into the Hawaiian vacation. In a week Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) and his fiancée Meredith (Julianne Hough) will finally tie the knot. Meredith may be a bit controlling, but wedding planning is serious business and Jason isn’t much help. Once an aspiring photographer, Jason is now an uptight lawyer at his father’s (Dermot Mulroney) practice. Jason’s life (according to his father) is finally taking shape until his grandmother dies. The film starts after the funeral where life goes on for Jason, as he and Meredith are finalizing their wedding plans. Jason’s grandfather Dick (Robert De Niro) is in mourning wants to go to a special vacation spot where he and his wife went over the last 40 years. What seems like a chance for Jason to bond with his grandfather, Dick has other ideas. Allegedly, Grandma’s dying wish, was for Dick to go out and find love again. As a horny septuagenarian, Dick will settle for lust and worry about love later. For Jason, surviving the weekend with his horny grandpa in tow won’t be as easy as it seems.
We all grow older in life. But ask yourself how old do you feel? I for one at times feel my age but there are many times in which I feel a tremendous amount younger than I am. Perhaps it’s because I have friends that are younger, or maybe it’s because I refuse to want to “grow up” as they say. But no matter what we are forced to continue down the path of maturity and move on. And in Liberal Arts, the film shows us that as much as we want to cling on to our youth, we must grow with our lives.
They say everything happens for a reason. Every little thing that we experience in our lives may. So finding something that can be considered a lucky charm is not unheard of. It’s our natural instinct to assign some kind of meaning to an object to make it more personal. And I suppose in times of war and combat, when you find something that you can associate with the good fortune of coming out unscathed when so many other people do not, is something to be very happy about and is worth being treasured.
